Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice is the only refereed research journal in the United States devoted to Catholic Education. The journal is published quarterly, though starting in September 2011 will be published two times a year in September and March. Each issue maintains a balance of articles focused on both K-12 and higher education. Thus, Catholic Education appeals to K-12 teachers and administrators, diocesan and parish staff, and professors and administrators in higher education. First founded by Fordham University, Saint Louis University, the University of Dayton, and the University of San Francisco with a grant from the Lilly Endowment, the journal is now supported by 18 Catholic universities, including Boston College.

Purpose

  1. To support Catholic education and its contributions to the culture.
  2. To contribute to the creation of a new vision of Catholic education by: exploring important issues that challenge the field; drawing upon the philosophical and theological traditions of Catholic education, as well as an interdisicplinary perspective, in analyzing these issues; examining selected research studies that relate to the purposes and practices of Catholic education.
  3. To nourish the ministerial role of educators by exploring the relationship between Christian faith and professional practice.
  4. To challenge Catholic educators to rethink from an inquiry orientation their positions on the major questions confronting their institutions and their unique traditions.

Peer Review Process

Each article is first reviewed by the editors, who determine whether the article will be sent to peer review. Articles are sent to at least three peer reviewers in a blind peer review process. Once the reviews are received, the editors make a final decision on the article.

Peer reviewers are asked to rate the general readability of the manuscript, suitability of the material, creativity of expression, focus and clarity of the viewpoint, soundness of the conclusions, knowledge of related literature, theoretical framework (where applicable), interpretation and analysis, importance of the issue, written expression, contribution to the field, and contribution to the mission of the journal. The editors are looking for articles that score highly in all categories, are rich in quality, skill, thinking, integrity, and in agreement with the mission of the journal.
