Abstract

Constructed almost entirely from still photos, Chris Marker's short film La Jetée is undoubtedly a tribute to the origins of cinema. It proposes, as many analysis have shown, a complex and subtle interpretation of the role of images and memory. By settling the action in the underground of the city of Paris devastated by World War III, it warns us against the dangers of progress and can be considered as a science-fiction film. However, La Jetée is also an attempt, successful in many ways, to link different movies. It is especially this aspect that is addressed in the analysis of « Dans le jardin », probably the most interesting and complex sequence of the film.
