Abstract

The student loan indebtedness issue has become one of the most significant issues in higher education in the United States. This issue impacts nearly 45 million Americans and has long-term economic consequences that are just beginning to be felt throughout the country’s economy. This article addresses the evolution of this national problem and discusses the economic ramifications of the student loan debt crisis.

F. King Alexander has been a professor and president of four large public universities in the United States for over two decades and currently serves as a professor of educational leadership at Florida Gulf Coast University, a senior faculty fellow at the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama and a faculty affiliate at the Cornell University Higher Education Research Institute, United States.
