Abstract

In days marked by division, faith can offer a source of hope and a challenge to how we understand ourselves and one another. On Saturday,March 14, 2026, Lumen et Vita held a conference entitled “Faith in Fractured Times,” inviting papers that considered how religious traditions, figures, and communities respond to division.

In “Saint Stein,” Grace Terry examines the life of Edith Stein, also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Through Stein’s work on empathy and her complex place within Jewish and Catholic memory, Terry considers how faith can sustain belonging across difference without erasing the identities that make those differences meaningful.

We hope that this volume offers perspectives on what faith demands of us in fractured times and how religious traditions might help us recognize both our differences and our shared
humanity
